The Pilsen International Folklore Festival CIOFF® has been the meeting place for lovers and admirers of folklore and folk art since 1997. Every year, around 20 adult and children folklore ensembles from all over the Czech Republic and abroad, including guests from overseas, participate in the festival.
The individual parts of the festival programme take place in the historical centre of the city (the scene "U Branky", Smetanovy Sady), one part of the programme takes place in the picturesque surrounding of the villages and towns in the vicinity of Pilsen. The aim of the festival is to present traditional folk dance and musical performances to as many people as possible. Festival spectators also have great opportunity to get familiar with new directions of folk music and dance which are always to a certain extent inspired by its traditional expression.
At present, the main organizer of the festival is the Pilsen Folk Scene in cooperation with the Jiskra Song and Dance Folklore Ensemble from Pilsen. The main partners of the festival are the city of Pilsen, the Pilsen Region, the 700 years of the City of Pilsen Foundation, the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic, and Hotel IBIS Pilsen. The main media partner of the festival is the Czech Radio Pilsen.
Since 2008, the festival is a member of the UNESCO’s prestigious worldwide CIOFF® organization.
